Roundhouse Round-up

Home Up

This is the Roundhouse.  Here you will find a roster of my current engines as well as past engines that have moved onto other lines.  Each one includes pictures of the engine as well as the rolling stock I run with that engine.  Engines will appear in reverse order of acquisition.

Soon to come, Accucraft Shay, HO Tram Engine, Accucraft Mogul, Antique Carrett 0-4-0.

Roundhouse Darjeeling

Like many engines, this engine was bought from the swap tables at Diamondhead.  However, it was in new condition and still in the box.  My spies saw it when it hit the table and then a few minutes later it reached me.  It was a great value.  Had a minor dent in the roof and one buffer was bent, which I bent back without a problem.  The exchange rate has been so high I never really considered getting one.  Figured one day I would find a used engine.  It's a Roundhouse so even a used one should run good and parts are always available.

This was just after I got it.  Before it's first run.

The same person I had bought the engine from had designed scale coaches for the Darjeeling.  He then had them made in brass and painted.  He had brought multiple sets with him to sell and since I was already going to be on PB&Js for the next few months, what was one month more!

Aster BR-86

I first saw this engine at Diamondhead when it was up for sale, January 17th 2003.  A good friend in our club (MSSLS) bought the engine at that time.  So I saw it running at some of our events from time to time.  I always told him that if he ever wanted to sell it to let me know.  When that day came, I was not in the position to buy it.  A little disappointing.  It remained for sale for a few months and then I made the final deal to buy it.

Running at the first day of our MSSLS, Huckleberry event.  3 days before I bought it.

January 15th 2008, almost exactly 5 years later the engine was back at Diamondhead.

Aster Grasshopper

This was another engine I had been looking for for some time.  Like the Stanley below, the Grasshopper is hard to find.  The coaches that go with it are almost impossible to find.  Fred had found this Grasshopper for sale through a friend who saw it at a train show in New York.  He wanted the two coaches that came with it but not the engine since he already had one.  So Fred bought the set and I bought the engine from him.  Another great day in the hobby.

Roundhouse Stanley

I had always liked this tram engine and had been casually watching for one to become available.  Roundhouse had only made about 100 of these in the 80's so you don't see them for sale often.  Then one day someone posted one on the Steam in the Garden web site.  Apparently I was the first of many to send the seller an e-mail so he gave me first crack at buying it.

Running at Robb's annual steamup.  the same place I bought Billy the year before.  Pulling three LGB 3rd class passenger cars that I still run today.

Another image from Robb's out loop.

June 24th 2002 - Moved on to another line.

Roundhouse Billy

My next engine was a Roundhouse Billy in Green.  Like all Roundhouse engines it ran smooth and I never had a problem.  I bought it from a good friend in our train club and put many hours on it.  The front and back plates had been replaced with wood and new buffers had been added.  I didn't make any additional changes to this engine while I had it.  It was R/C controlled and ran like a clock the whole time  I ended up selling it because I had bought another engine and Billy was not seeing much run time.

These are not the cars I ran with it.  Just some I borrowed for my first runs.

Again, running someone else's rolling stock on my garden railway.

This time I was running a piece of my own rolling stock.  This was a nice steamup at a friends with just the right weather for great plums.

March 7th 2000 - Still in Use Today

Accucraft Ruby 0-4-0

My first live steamer and probably a first for many others in the hobby.  This was the first run of the engine.  Made space on the garage floor for a small oval, didn't know what I was doing but I was excited.  Didn't run very well but there was a lot to learn.  It was winter and the garage was heated.  However, it was about 40 degrees on the floor so I had a hard time making steam.  There were other issues but I eventually worked through them.  This was one of the first batch they made.  The ones they make now run a lot better out of the box.

Removed the side tanks, added running boards and made a cow catcher from a small block of Cherry I had.

Ruby with R/C added.  Batteries and controls stored in new TNT car.  All cars kit based from Hartland plastic stake cars.

Running Ruby at Diamondhead 2002 with my kit bashed Hartland ore cars and a lode of Gold Ore!
